Our Assessment: The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .480 Ruger is a compact, double-action revolver specifically designed for extreme power in a highly portable package. It is ideal for personal defense against large predators, making it a popular choice for those who spend time in the wilderness or remote areas. Chambered in the powerful .480 Ruger cartridge, this revolver delivers substantial stopping power in a relatively small and manageable form. The .480 Ruger cartridge, introduced in 2003, was developed in partnership between Ruger and Hornady to bridge the gap between the .44 Magnum and larger calibers like the .454 Casull. It delivers formidable power and energy without the extreme recoil of the more powerful magnums, making it a balance between raw stopping power and shootability. The cartridge is particularly effective for use in environments where protection from dangerous game or large animals like bears is necessary. The Super Redhawk Alaskan features a heavy-duty stainless steel frame and cylinder, designed to withstand the high pressures generated by the .480 Ruger cartridge. Its robust construction and the use of high-grade materials ensure durability and longevity, even under extreme conditions. Weighing in at just over 44 ounces, the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan is hefty enough to handle the recoil of the .480 Ruger, yet compact enough for ease of carry. Its stainless steel construction resists corrosion, making it ideal for use in harsh outdoor environments, such as the Alaskan wilderness for which it is named.
The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .480 Ruger is a purpose-built revolver, offering a blend of power, durability, and portability. Whether used for personal defense in bear country or as a robust backup firearm during hunting expeditions, this revolver provides a reliable solution when maximum stopping power is essential. -R.E.
