The bluing is deep, dark, and intact throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition. It would rate higher, but the condition of the stock brings it down a little.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the cross-bolt safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the sling and scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: Ruger’s Model 44 Carbine was one of the first successful semi-automatic rifles chambered for the powerful .44 Remington Magnum cartridge, offering hunters a compact rifle with quick follow-up capability and substantial close-range performance. Produced from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, these carbines developed a dedicated following due to their unique design, handy size, and place in Ruger’s early magnum rifle history. This 1970 C&R-eligible example is chambered in .44 Magnum and features an 18 1/2″ barrel, tubular magazine, factory iron sights, Simmons 8-Point 3-9×40 scope, smooth wood stock with Monte Carlo comb, nylon sling, and classic Ruger styling. The early production status, C&R eligibility, desirable .44 Magnum chambering, and strong mechanical condition should appeal to Ruger collectors and hunters looking for a distinctive vintage semi-automatic carbine.

This rifle rates in Good to Very Good overall condition, retaining about 98% of its original blued finish. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10 in this writer’s opinion. The wood stock rates in Good condition, showing light scratches, dings, and compressions throughout, with a visible repair at the wrist and a chipped toe on the stock, while retaining largely intact finish and tight fit to the barreled action. The metal remains the strongest aspect of the rifle, showing only minor superficial imperfections and scattered handling marks while retaining deep, dark, intact bluing. The Simmons scope rates in Very Good condition with clear glass and light wear, the markings are clear and legible, the screw heads are tooled but serviceable, and the action and cross-bolt safety function correctly. This rifle includes the scope and nylon sling as described. Please see our photos for a better understanding of condition, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
