Our Assessment: The Ruger M77 Gunsite Scout Rifle was introduced in 2011 as a modern interpretation of Col. Jeff Cooper’s scout rifle concept, combining compact dimensions, controlled round feed reliability, and practical field features in a hard-use platform. Built on the proven M77 Mark II action, the Gunsite Scout pairs a 16.5 inch barrel with forward-mounted optic capability and detachable box magazine flexibility. Chambered in .308 Winchester, a cartridge introduced in 1952 and long respected for its balance of power, efficiency, and manageable recoil, this configuration delivers serious performance in a compact, maneuverable package.
This 2012 example retains approximately 99 percent of its original matte blued finish, with only minor handling marks noted. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9.5 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The laminate stock remains tight to the action and presents in Excellent condition, with well-defined checkering and only minor superficial handling impressions. Equipped with protected front sight, adjustable aperture rear, forward picatinny rail, threaded muzzle with flash hider, and a 10 round detachable magazine, this M77 Gunsite Scout remains a clean, well-kept example of Ruger’s modern utility rifle concept.
