Our Assessment: Ruger’s Gunsite Scout Rifle was developed around the scout-rifle concept popularized by Jeff Cooper, emphasizing a compact, handy, general-purpose bolt action rifle with practical sights, detachable-magazine capability, and forward optic mounting provisions. This 2011 Ruger M77 Gunsite Scout is chambered in .308 Winchester, a widely respected cartridge known for manageable recoil, broad ammunition availability, and excellent utility for hunting, field use, and general-purpose rifle work. This example features a 16.5″ barrel threaded 5/8×24, measuring 19″ with the flash hider installed, 1:10″ twist, protected blade front sight, adjustable ghost ring rear sight, forward 6″ Picatinny scout rail, black laminate stock with adjustable length of pull, and one 10-round Ruger AI-pattern magazine. The compact Scout Rifle configuration, .308 chambering, iron sight setup, forward rail, included Ruger rings, and detachable magazine system should appeal to buyers and collectors looking for a versatile field, range, or general purpose rifle with classic Ruger M77 aesthetics. These rifles are rising in popularity, with the discontinuation of the M77 Gunsite Scout Rifle in January 2026.
