Our Assessment: These are bullet points about the Hawkeye African taken from the Ruger Website: “Non-rotating, Mauser-type controlled round feed extractor is the most positive case extraction system ever invented, and features a fixed blade-type ejector that positively ejects the empty cases as the bolt is moved fully rearward.. Three-position safety is easily accessible and allows the shooter to lock the bolt or to load and unload the rifle with the safety engaged.. Integral scope mounts, machined directly on the solid-steel receiver, provide a stable mounting surface for scope rings, eliminating a potential source of looseness and inaccuracy in the field (scope rings included).. Ergonomically pleasing, American walnut stock has rounded contours along the barrel, on the bottom of the stock and on top of the pistol grip and wrap-around checkering on grip and forend.. Hinged solid-steel floorplate for easy unloading without having to chamber each cartridge. Features an engraved Ruger logo and patented latch that is flush with the trigger guard to avoid accidental dumping of cartridges.”

This example is a Ruger Hawkeye African model 47180 chambered for .275 Rigby (7×57 Mauser). This M77 Hawkeye was made in 2017 and it was a Lipsey’s exclusive, with only 250 ever being made. The ballistics of the 7×57mm became popular with deer and plains game hunters. The relatively flat trajectory and manageable recoil ensured its place as a sportsman’s cartridge. The 7×57mm can offer very good penetrating ability due to a fast twist rate that enables it to fire long, heavy bullets with a high sectional density. This made it popular in Africa, where it was used on animals up to and including elephants, for which it was particularly favored by noted ivory hunter W.D.M. “Karamojo” Bell, who shot about 800 African elephants with 1893 pattern 7×57mm military ball ammunition using Rigby Mauser 98 rifles, when most ivory hunters were using larger-caliber rifles. This Ruger Hawkeye African is in great shape, showing little use. This would make an excellent Safari Rifle, we do not see these very often so do not miss this chance to own this well made and well maintained Rare Ruger Hawkeye.
