Sights/Optics:  The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to a banded base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a folding “U” notch with white triangle aiming reference; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation. The top rear of the barrel and receiver are factory drilled, tapped and filled for mounting an optic (none present).

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece smooth wood with banded forend, semi-pistol grip, straight comb and black plastic carbine-style buttplate. Sling studs have been installed front and rear. The stock has scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear, mostly at the heel and toe. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There are some spots of minor erosion toward the muzzle-end and some stubborn copper fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7 or 8 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There are some scattered light nicks and scratches. There are some spots of light surface oxidation, mostly on the barrel. The top of the receiver and top-rear of the barrel have minor wear from a previously installed optic mount. There is wear around the loading port from use. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The forbearer of the 10/22, and frankly all subsequent Ruger rifles, the 44 Carbine hasn’t been produced since 1985, but collectors desire this rifle even today. Unlike most Ruger firearms this was not a product of investment casting. It was machined making it a rarity among most Ruger firearms. This gun will make a perfect hunting companion as it is light enough to carry in the field for long periods of time and has the power to take down threats such as mountain lions. We have always wondered why Ruger stopped making these, but until they start production again you’d do well to buy this one. This 44 Carbine should do well in the field or at the range. Please see our photos and good luck!
