Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade atop a raised barrel mounted base. The rear sight is a flip-up “U” notch with a white diamond aiming reference that is adjustable for elevation. The top rear of the barrel and receiver are factory drilled, tapped and filled to accept an optic rail installed. (No Rail Is Included.)
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece smooth wood with finger-grooved forend, capped semi-pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb and black plastic carbine-style buttplate.There are handling and storage marks. There are scattered scuffs, draglines and light compressions. There are finish irregularities and spots of finish pooling that lead us to believe that the stock has been refinished. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has minor wear, mostly at the heel and toe. There is a large tool mark on the right edge. The plate is proud to the buttstock. Overall, the stock is in Very Good Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates a 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There are scattered handling marks, scuffs and draglines. The barrel shank is starting to turn a mottled brown patina. There is some finish thinning on top of the receiver. The screws range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The butt plate screws have become oxidized. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: The rifle comes in its paperwork including the owner’s manual.
Our Assessment: The forbearer of the 10/22, and frankly all subsequent Ruger rifles, the 44 Carbine hasn’t been produced since 1985 but collectors desire this rifle even today. Unlike most Ruger firearms this was not a product of investment casting. It was machined making it a rarity among most Ruger firearms. This rifle is in Very Good Plus condition, with a bright bore and a sound action. This gun will make a perfect hunting companion as it is light enough to carry in the field for long periods of time and has the power to take down medium-sized game as well as threats such as mountain lions. We have always wondered why Ruger stopped making these but until they start production again you’d do well to buy this one. This 44 Carbine should do well in the field or at the range.
