Our Assessment: The Ruger New Model Blackhawk S38X Buckeye Special is one of the more desirable limited-production Ruger single-action revolvers of the modern era. Produced in 1990 as part of the Buckeye Sports Supply special run, this convertible Blackhawk was chambered for both .38-40 Winchester and 10mm Auto, giving it a unique blend of Old West character and modern semi-automatic cartridge performance. The Buckeye leaf emblem on the topstrap, dual-cylinder configuration, blued finish, 6.5-inch barrel, and smooth walnut grips make this revolver immediately recognizable to Ruger collectors. Its combination of uncommon chamberings and limited distribution gives it considerably more collector interest than a standard cataloged Blackhawk. This example remains in Excellent condition, retaining approximately 99% of its original blued finish with only faint handling marks. The 10mm cylinder shows a faint turn line and light burn marks, while the .38-40 cylinder remains sealed in plastic, adding meaningful collector appeal. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no visible erosion, and only some stubborn fouling, rating 9.75/10. The smooth walnut grips with silver Ruger medallions remain in Excellent condition with no notable handling marks, chips, or cracks. The screw heads are sharp, the pins are undamaged, and the revolver includes its original shipping box, original box, paperwork, and sealed .38-40 cylinder.

For Ruger collectors, Buckeye Special enthusiasts, and single-action shooters, this S38X Blackhawk is an excellent find. The .38-40 Winchester chambering connects the revolver to classic frontier-era cartridges, while the 10mm Auto cylinder gives it a modern, powerful, and practical shooting option. Complete examples with both boxes, paperwork, and an unused sealed auxiliary cylinder are especially desirable, and this revolver’s high condition makes it stand out as a strong collector-grade example of one of Ruger’s most interesting convertible Blackhawks. -R.E.
