Sights / Optics: The front sight is a tall square blade dovetailed to the barrel, The rear sight is a square-notch fixed sight dovetailed to the barrel.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a single piece full length tiger stripe maple wood with two ramrod loops, straight grip, and crescent buttplate capped with a steel plate and a horn insert. There are minor scratches and pressure dents throughout. The ramrod is in good shape. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in at about Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: Browned.

Finish Originality: Original.

Bore Condition: The bore is mirror bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is a small amount of rust at the very end of the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are scuffs and faint scratches throughout the metal surfaces. There is thinning throughout. The screw heads show signs of light use. Two screws in the trigger guard are not original. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Royland Southgate Flintlock Musket is a firearm renowned for its craftsmanship and design. Manufactured by Royland Southgate, a prominent gunsmith from the 50s to 1979 when he died, this musket represents a classic example of flintlock technology. R. Southgate hand built 849 rifles and 158 pistols both percussion and flintlock and produced these rifles the traditional way using high quality materials to do so. Everything down to the screws were handmade, and this particular rifle is in fabulous condition using tiger striped maple, with its 43 inch barrel, and horn accent this rifle is quite the looker. The barrel is in fantastic condition and the action functions flawlessly.
