Our Assessment: The SP-10 has a family history that reaches across two of America’s established shotgun makers. Remington introduced the model in 1989 after redesigning the Ithaca Mag-10, continuing a purpose-built 10-gauge autoloader under its own name. Its arrival coincided with a major change in American waterfowling. The phased withdrawal of lead shot for waterfowl hunting became nationwide in 1991, bringing renewed attention to shotgun and ammunition design during the transition to nontoxic alternatives. The SP-10 belongs to that period of specialization, when manufacturers were giving renewed attention to large-chamber sporting shotguns and dedicated hunting configurations.
The BM barrel code places this example’s barrel around 1992, close to the beginning of Remington production and immediately after that nationwide transition. Its barrel inscription specifies the 10-gauge, 3 1/2-inch chambering around which the model was built. At the same time, the checkered wood furniture preserves the familiar materials of the American sporting autoloader, even as the substantial action and comparatively short 25.5-inch barrel give this example its own proportions. Remington eventually offered the SP-10 in wood, camouflage, and synthetic configurations. Here the traditional stock accompanies a design carried forward from Ithaca at a moment when environmental changes were reshaping the equipment associated with American waterfowling.
