Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch leaf with a slot for the missing elevator. The tang has a sight slot installed. The actual tang sight is missing.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two piece walnut set with a metal tipped forend, straight wrist, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There is a crack on the right side of the upper tang. There are no chips. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore on the is bright and the rifling is strong throughout. There is no erosion in the bore. There is light fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 15% of its finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and oxidation throughout. There are a few light nicks in the barrel. There are spots of light surface rust freckling forming. Most of the finish has turned to a patina throughout. The case color on the receiver has mostly gone in the white. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington No. 1 Rolling Block is one of the classic American single-shot rifle actions of the black powder era, with the Creedmoor-style rifles representing Remington’s long-range target tradition. Rolling Block rifles were used in the early Creedmoor long-range matches, and Remington No. 1 sporting and target rifles remain desirable today for their strong, simple action and 19th-century competition heritage. This antique No. 1 Creedmoor is listed in .44 S, though the chamber should be cast to confirm the exact .44 cartridge before any ammunition is selected. It is configured with a 34” barrel, rolling block action, extractor, dovetailed blade front sight, rear barrel sight with missing elevator, and an upper tang slot for a missing tang sight.
This rifle retains about 15% of its original blued and case colored finish, with the balance showing scratches, oxidation, light nicks, light surface rust freckling, and patina throughout, while the receiver’s case colors have mostly worn in the white. The two-piece walnut stock rates in Very Good condition, showing scratches and compression marks with a crack on the right side of the upper tang, but no chips. The bore is bright with strong rifling, no erosion, and light fouling in the grooves, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the markings are clear, and the screw heads are sharp. This Remington should appeal to collectors of antique American single-shot rifles, Rolling Block target rifles, and black powder cartridge arms, especially given its strong bore and Creedmoor configuration. Due to the unverified .44 chambering and antique black powder design, this rifle should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith and chamber-cast before any attempt to fire it.
