Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch leaf with elevator dovetailed to the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two piece walnut set with a metal tipped forend, straight wrist, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There are a few deep compression marks throughout. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore on the is bright and the rifling is strong throughout. There is no erosion in the bore. There is light fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and oxidation throughout. There are a few light nicks in the barrel. There are spots of light surface rust freckling forming. Most of the finish has turned to a patina on the barrel’s edges. The case color on the receiver has mostly gone in the white. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington No. 1 Rolling Block is one of the classic American single-shot rifle actions of the black powder cartridge era, prized for its simple, strong rolling block mechanism and long association with sporting, military, and target rifles. Remington No. 1 Rolling Blocks were produced in the late 19th century, and the Creedmoor-style rifles are especially associated with long-range target shooting of the period. This antique No. 1 Creedmoor is listed in .38 caliber, though the exact chambering should be verified by chamber cast before ammunition is selected. It is configured with a 28” barrel, single-shot rolling block action, extractor, dovetailed blade front sight, U-notch rear sight with elevator, two-piece walnut stock, metal-tipped forend, straight wrist, straight comb, and crescent steel buttplate.
This rifle is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 85% of its original blued and case colored finish with handling and storage wear, scratches, oxidation, light barrel nicks, spots of light surface rust freckling, patina on the barrel edges, and case colors on the receiver mostly worn in the white. The two-piece walnut stock rates in Very Good condition, showing scratches, compression marks, and a few deeper compression marks, but no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with strong rifling, no erosion, and light fouling in the grooves, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the screw heads are sharp, and the markings are clear. This Remington should appeal to collectors of antique American single-shot rifles, Rolling Block target rifles, and black powder cartridge arms, especially given its strong bore and appealing remaining finish. Due to the unverified .38 chambering and antique black powder design, this rifle should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith and chamber-cast before any attempt to fire it.
