Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece, “Mohawk Brown”, checkered Zytel Polymer stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, serrated plastic Remington buttplate, and a checkered tipped forend. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows light wear, with light surface-level scratches and light dings scattered throughout. The checkering is well defined. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The smooth bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with thinning finish on the front sight blade, and some light operational marks on the bolt and friction surfaces of the action. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this smooth bore .22 rates in Very Good to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: Introduced in the early 1960s as part of Remington’s innovative Nylon series, the Model 10 was purpose-built as a lightweight smoothbore garden and camp rifle for .22 Long Rifle shotshells. Unlike the rifled Nylon 66, the Nylon 10 features a smooth bore barrel optimized for shot cartridges, making it ideal for close-range pest control around barns, sheds, and homesteads. The use of DuPont Zytel polymer in the Mohawk Brown stock was revolutionary for its time, offering weather resistance and durability that traditional walnut stocks could not match. The .22 LR shotshell has long been favored for dispatching snakes and small vermin at short distances with minimal risk of ricochet, and the smooth bore configuration enhances its pattern performance.

This January 1963 example remains in Very Good to Fine condition, retaining approximately 97 percent of its original blued finish with only light thinning at the front sight and minor operational marks on the bolt. The smooth bore is bright and rates 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The Mohawk Brown Zytel stock shows only light surface wear with crisp molded checkering and solid fit to the action. As a C&R-eligible early production specimen from the Nylon series, this Model 10 represents a fascinating chapter in mid-century firearms design and a practical, lightweight field rifle with enduring utility.
