Markings: The top of the barrel jacket is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE REMINGTON ARMS CO., ILION, N.Y. U.S.A. / BROWNING’S PATENTS OCT. 9, 1900 OCT. 16, 1900, JULY 3, 1902.MAY 14.1907, FEB.14.1911”. The right rear of the barrel, visible at the ejection port is marked “30 REM”. The bottom of the receiver is marked with three proofs and the serial number. The upper tang is marked “Remington / TRADE MARK”. The bottom tang is marked “REMINGTON UMC” within a circle and “TRADE MARK”. The buttplate is marked “REMINGTON / UMC / TRADE MARK”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed and screw set into a base fixed to the front of the barrel jacket. The rear sight is a folding invertible u/v notch sight with empty diamond aim reference screwed to the barrel. There is a Vintage Marble Sight mounted to the rear of the receiver.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, and smooth steel Remington buttplate. The LOP measures approximately 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the Remington buttplate. The plate has some scattered light wear and finish loss but has strong detail. There are some scattered compression lines on the stocks but overall the stocks remain free of any notable defects. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine-Excellent condition for C&R.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are areas of thinning and finish loss scattered over the barrel jacket and receiver, mainly at the muzzle. There are a few small handling marks. The lever has some finish loss as well as on the rear of the receiver. There is light operation wear. There is some minor scattered oxidation on the receiver. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are visible but some are soft. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine Condition as C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 8 was the brainchild of John Moses Browning. Originally patented in 1900, it was the first successful high-powered semi-auto rifle made in the United States–or just about anywhere else, for that matter. It is a long-recoil operated rifle and feeds from a fixed magazine. The model 8 was chambered in four different Remington rimless cartridges, they were the .25, .30, .32, and .35 Remington. They were primarily used by hunters, though some law enforcement agencies adopted them and it was possible to modify them for removable magazines. It was even the preferred rifle of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer who used a customized .35 caliber model with 15-round magazines, and his was one of the two Model 8’s known to be at the ambush of Bonnie & Clyde. This example was made in 1925 based on its serial number and date code and is chambered in .30 Remington, it is in about Fine condition with an excellent bore and strong mechanics.
