Our Assessment: The Remington Model 760 Gamemaster in .244 Remington is a notable rifle, particularly for its combination of a classic pump-action design with a less common cartridge choice. Introduced in the 1950s, the Model 760 Gamemaster was Remington’s answer to the demand for a high-powered, fast-operating pump-action hunting rifle, and it quickly gained popularity among hunters for its reliability and versatility.
The .244 Remington cartridge was designed to deliver flat trajectories and high velocities, ideal for accurate long-range shooting. However, the .244 Remington initially faced some market resistance, partly due to competition with the similar .243 Winchester cartridge and misconceptions about its suitability for deer hunting.
The Model 760 itself features a robust, well-crafted design. It includes a detachable magazine and a smooth, reliable pump-action mechanism, which allows for quick follow-up shots. The rifle’s stock and forend are traditionally crafted from wood, giving it a classic aesthetic appeal. Its adjustable sights and capability to mount a scope made it a versatile choice for various hunting scenarios.
Despite the initial market challenges of the .244 Remington cartridge, the Model 760 Gamemaster in this chambering has become a sought-after rifle among collectors and hunters who appreciate its historical significance and the unique combination of its action type and caliber. It represents an interesting chapter in Remington’s history, showcasing the evolution of hunting rifles and cartridges during the mid-20th century. Please see our photos and good luck!
