Gauge: 12 Gauge, 2 ¾” Shells
Action Type: Over Under Top Break with Single Trigger and a selector mounted on the front of the trigger, a tang mounted safety and Individual Ejectors.
Barrel Length: 26”
Choke: Fixed Skeet chokes.
Markings: The bottom of the receiver is marked “Remington / REG.U.S.PAT.OFF. / MODEL 32 / 3704 / SKEET”. The inside of the receiver is marked “3704”. The left upper barrel is marked “12 GA”. The bottom of the block is marked “3704”. The top of the barrel set is marked with “ REMINGTON ARMS CO.INC. ILION MADE IN USA” and the patent numbers. The top of the barrel markings are hard to read since someone installed a rib directly over the top of them. The forend iron is marked “3704”. The buttplate is marked “Remington / REG.U.S.A.PAT.OFF.”. The left side of the barrel block is marked “PZZ3”
Sights / Optics: This shotgun originally only had a brass bead front sight. At some point someone added the rib to the top barrel and added a white bead front sight with a smaller brass mid bead. The top of the rib is finely checkered for reducing glare.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock on this shotgun appears to have been replaced. The installed furniture set on this shotgun is a two piece checkered walnut set with a medium profile rounded forend with a ¾ length finger shelf. The stock is a semi-pistol grip stock, with a fluted straight comb and what appears to be a bakelite buttplate. The LOP is 14” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The drop at comb is 1.5” and the drop at heel is 2.25”. The cast is barely right handed. The forend shows one medium sized compression on the right side of the belly and some scattered minor handling wear. The stock has a light scratch on the left flank, and some minor handling / storage wear. There is a small crack forming from the rear of the upper tang. The buttplate shows some minor rub wear.
Type of Finish: Blued/Black with engraving.
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bores are very bright. There is no erosion. There are some minor lines from use but there is no visible plastic fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are two marks in the right side lower barrel that have removed the finish, there is also the usual rub wear on both barrels from the forend that is concealed when the gun is assembled. The muzzle also shows some finish loss. The front barrel lug that holds the upper barrel to the lower barrel appears to be a little loose. If you gently squeeze the barrels you can feel the lower barrel move slightly. This was an intentional design choice to allow the barrels to expand and contract independently under heat stress. The separated barrels were designed to offer better cooling in between rounds. The non factory installed rib also rattles in some sections. I would also like to point out the engraving, although it is very nicely done I have not seen another example that has the same level of detail. Most of the factory engraved models out there do in fact have the same dogs on both sides however the factory engraving is not nearly as detailed or clean as this one. I also searched the engraving but could not find a signature. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall this shotgun is in Good to Good + condition considering the age.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, the trigger mounted selector and ejectors work correctly. The tang mounted safety works correctly. The top slide lock does not always lock back with the tang lever but does function even when it does not lock back all the way. The action is a little stiff on the break after the hammers have been released. This was tested with snap caps. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Remington Model 32 is a classic American over-and-under shotgun named after its first full production year in 1932 and was notable for its robust design and innovative features. Originally developed to compete with high-quality European shotguns, the Model 32 distinguished itself by combining a sleek profile with engineering innovations that made it a favorite among skeet and trap shooters. During this time period double barrel shotguns had begun to lose popularity with the introduction of pump and semi auto shotguns. Doubles were also more expensive to produce. However in the late twenties skeet and trap began to grow in popularity so Remington decided to try something new. They turned to their own C.C. Loomis, who designed the Model 32. He utilized a unique metal hood twin-locking lug system for the action, giving it exceptional durability and strength that became a hallmark of the model. This shotgun also included other ideas way ahead of its time, featuring a “hammerless” boxlock action, selectable barrels and ejectors, and a separated barrel design allowing for thermal expansion and better cooling. The skeet configuration in 12 gauge, featured a ribless design with shorter barrels making it easier and faster to swing, perfect for the sport of skeet. Though production of the Remington Model 32 ended in 1942 with less than 6,000 total being produced, its impact endured. The design was so well-regarded that Krieghoff acquired the rights after World War II, leading to the development of the Krieghoff K-32, which later evolved into the world-renowned K-80 used by many of the world’s top shooters. Today, the Remington Model 32 remains a collectible piece, admired for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and lasting influence on high-end competitive shotguns.
