Our Assessment: The Remington Model 1903A3 Springfield was one of the principal U.S. service rifles of World War II, representing the simplified wartime evolution of the earlier Model 1903. Manufactured by Remington in 1943, this example reflects late-war production with the receiver mounted aperture rear sight and Parkerized finish typical of the 03-A3 pattern. This rifle appears to have undergone refurbishment through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), with the metal refinished in Parkerizing and accompanied by a CMP certificate. The receiver markings remain clear, and the rifle retains approximately 95 percent of its current finish with only light scratching, scattered nicks, and minor corrosion freckling visible, placing the rifle overall in Good to Very Good condition.

Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the rifle retains its original military configuration including the internal box magazine with magazine cutoff and a 24 inch barrel fitted with a pinned blade front sight and receiver mounted peep rear sight. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, though some fouling remains present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10, reflecting strong internal condition consistent with a rifle that has seen refurbishment and careful preservation.

The two piece walnut stock retains the traditional straight grip military configuration with two barrel bands secured by spring clips and a checkered steel buttplate. The wood shows evidence of refinishing, including sanding marks and uneven finish application, along with scratches and compression dents typical of military surplus stocks. The stock bears several inspection and rebuild markings including “RA,” “FJA,” and “RIA EB,” consistent with arsenal inspection and later refurbishment. Overall, the stock rates in Good condition. Mechanically, the action cycles correctly and functions as intended. This Remington Model 1903A3 stands as a representative example of a WWII era service rifle that has been refurbished for civilian ownership through the CMP program.
