Barrel Length: 18.5″
Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed and set screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a spring leaf U notch with elevator dovetailed to the barrel.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with grooved slide handle, smooth straight grip, straight comb, and checkered plastic replacement Remington buttplate. The LOP is 13 1/4″ from trigger to buttplate. The stock has been refinished. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There are small cracks at the wrist. Overall this stock is in Good condition as refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is some very minor erosion and pitting. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 8.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its current blued finish. There are scratches and light corrosion stains throughout. There are nicks and tool marks scattered throughout. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 14 1/2 is a distinctive slide-action sporting rifle based on John D. Pedersen’s innovative Model 14 system and chambered for traditional pistol-length cartridges. This example is chambered in .44 Remington, Remington’s designation for the .44-40 W.C.F., and features an 18 1/2″ barrel, tubular magazine, grooved slide handle, straight-grip walnut stock, and conventional open sights. Its compact proportions and uncommon chambering give it strong appeal among collectors of early Remington pump-action sporting rifles.
The Model 14 1/2 was developed as a companion to the larger Model 14 and used the same basic pump-action design while accommodating cartridges such as the .38-40 and .44-40. These rifles offered hunters and outdoorsmen fast follow-up shots in a compact, enclosed-hammer sporting arm. This example is additionally interesting because the barrel carries an earlier address style while the date code and serialized receiver are later. That combination points to either late assembly using earlier remaining components or a possible factory return and repair, though the available evidence does not conclusively establish which explanation is correct.
