Our Assessment: The Remington Model 11 holds a special place in the history of American firearms as the first U.S.-produced semi-automatic shotgun. Based on John Browning’s legendary Auto-5 design, the Model 11 was manufactured under license by Remington from 1905 until 1947. The shotgun utilizes a long-recoil operation, in which the entire barrel recoils rearward with the bolt before resetting for the next shot. This system, while eventually superseded by gas-operated designs, proved to be highly reliable and was a major advancement in shotgun technology during the early 20th century.

The Model 11 was widely adopted by sportsmen, law enforcement, and the military, with riot and trench variants being particularly notable. During World War II, the U.S. military used Model 11 riot and trench shotguns for guard duty, security, and combat roles. These shotguns were often seen in the hands of military police, naval personnel, and guards protecting critical infrastructure. The riot version, like the one seen here, featured a shorter barrel for increased maneuverability, making it well-suited for defensive applications and close-quarters combat. The reliability and effectiveness of these shotguns kept them in service for decades, with many being used by police forces and prison guards long after World War II.

This particular Model 11 riot shotgun represents a key piece of American firearms history. Whether you’re a collector of military and law enforcement firearms, a fan of John Browning’s designs, or simply looking for a well-built and historically significant shotgun, this Remington Model 11 is a fantastic addition to any collection. With its proven design and storied past, it remains a highly desirable firearm. Please see our high-quality photos and good luck on your bid! -M.C.
