Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.75/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with minor thinning of the finish at the muzzle, along with a few minor imperfections throughout the rest of the metal surfaces. The bluing is deep and dark, otherwise. The jeweling on the bolt is vivid and bright. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Remington 700 Safari Grade represents the American bolt action at its most refined, built to handle classic dangerous game cartridges while retaining the smooth, reliable Model 700 action that has defined generations of sporting rifles. Chambered in .375 H&H Magnum, a cartridge introduced in 1912 by Holland & Holland and long regarded as the benchmark for African plains and dangerous game, this rifle delivers authority and versatility in a single package. The Safari Grade trim with rosewood grip cap and forend tip, checkered walnut, and open sights reflects its intended role as a serious hunting rifle for large and potentially dangerous game.
This 1981 example retains approximately 98 percent of its original blued finish with only minor thinning at the muzzle and light handling marks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9.75 out of 10. The walnut stock remains in Good to Very Good condition with well defined checkering and no structural issues. The jeweling on the bolt remains vivid, and the action operates correctly with proper safety function. Overall, this is a clean, well preserved Safari Grade in one of the most respected big game cartridges ever developed.
