Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheekpiece, black rubber Remington buttpad, a checkered capped forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with light scratches and dings scattered throughout. The checkering is mostly well defined, with a couple of the dings being present in the checkering on both the wrist and the forend. The gloss finish on the stock is largely intact. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.75/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with some thinning of the finish at the muzzle and on the bolt handle, along with a few light scratches and dings throughout the metal surfaces. The bolt shows operational wear, but the jeweling is mostly visible, and the bolt handle/knob shows more of a plum hue. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a light, crisp, and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements. This rifle weights 6 lbs 9 oz as it sits in its current configuration.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the picatinny rail as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Remington 700 Mountain Rifle was introduced as a lighter, more refined variation of the proven Model 700 platform, intended for hunters covering serious ground in steep or timbered country. By 1987, the Mountain Rifle had established a reputation for blending the strength of the 700 action with a slimmer “Mountain Contour” barrel and elegant walnut stock. Chambered in .280 Remington, this rifle offers a versatile cartridge introduced in 1957 that delivers flat trajectory and excellent big game performance with manageable recoil, making it a respected alternative to the .270 Winchester and 7mm Remington Magnum.
This April 1987 example retains approximately 96 percent of its original blued finish, showing light thinning at the muzzle and minor handling marks consistent with careful field use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9.75 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stock remains solid with mostly well-defined checkering and honest cosmetic wear, fitting tightly to the action. The action cycles properly and the trigger breaks cleanly, and a one-piece picatinny rail is installed for optics.
