Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with Remington’s 2-line warning & address, “280 REM”, the “RH” date code, and a couple proof marks. The right side of the barrel is marked with a series of proof marks. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number, and “Remington / MODEL 700”. The serial number on the bolt matches the serial number on the receiver.
Barrel Length: 22″; 24″ with muzzle brake attached. Remington’s “Mountain Contour” barrel. The muzzle brake is threaded on very tightly, unable to verify thread pitch.
Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a two-piece base and 1″ rings for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheekpiece, black rubber Remington buttpad, a tipped forend, and sling rings front and rear. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light to moderate wear, with scratches, dings, and compressions scattered throughout, most notably on the buttstock. There are small areas of worn finish around where the buttstock meets up with the buttpad, along with some missing finish on the forend tip. The checkering is well defined, and the stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Good to Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.75/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with light thinning of the finish on the muzzle brake, along with very minor freckling of surface corrosion forming on the bolt. The bolt handle/knob shows light thinning and turning to a plum hue. Otherwise, the finish is largely intact. The jeweling on the bolt is still visible and bright. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Remington’s Model 700 Mountain Rifle was built as a lighter, handier hunting variant of the proven Model 700 platform, pairing a slim Mountain Contour barrel with traditional sporting-rifle handling for hunters who cover ground in more rugged terrain. This 1987 example is chambered in .280 Remington, a versatile and efficient hunting cartridge known for flat trajectory, manageable recoil, and strong performance on deer, antelope, elk, and similar game with proper loads. This rifle features a 22″ barrel measuring 24″ with the installed muzzle brake, internal magazine with hinged floorplate, matching serialized bolt, checkered walnut stock with cheekpiece and tipped forend, and a two-piece scope base with 1″ rings. The metal shows light wear, including thinning on the muzzle brake, very minor freckling on the bolt, and thinning on the bolt handle/knob with some plum coloration, though the finish is otherwise largely intact and the bolt jeweling remains visible and bright. The markings are clear and legible, the screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable, and the action and safety function correctly.
