Our Assessment:  The Remington Model 58 Sportsman is a historically significant shotgun, known for being one of Remington’s first gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns. Introduced in 1956, the Model 58 marked a departure from the recoil-operated designs that were prevalent at the time. Its gas operation system was a groundbreaking innovation, providing smoother cycling and reducing felt recoil, which made it more comfortable to shoot, especially during extended sessions.

The Model 58 Sportsman features a sleek, blued steel receiver and a walnut stock, combining durability with classic aesthetics. It was offered in various gauges, including 12, 16, and 20, and was available with different barrel lengths and choke options, making it adaptable to various hunting and shooting applications. The shotgun’s gas system was adjustable, allowing users to fine-tune the cycling for different loads, enhancing its versatility.

Although the Model 58 was eventually replaced by the more widely known Remington Model 1100, it remains an important milestone in shotgun development. Collectors and enthusiasts appreciate the Model 58 for its role in advancing semi-automatic shotgun technology and its reliable performance. Its combination of innovative design, smooth operation, and classic styling ensures its place as a valued piece in the history of American firearms.  This shotgun has been converted to 28 GA, a chambering the model 58 was never manufactured in.  It is in Excellent condition and will make an excellent range gun or collector’s piece.
