Our Assessment:  The Remington Model 58 Sportsman in 20 gauge is a significant piece of shotgun history, known for being one of Remington’s first gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns. Introduced in 1956, the Model 58 Sportsman was developed as an innovative alternative to the recoil-operated designs of the time, offering smoother operation and reduced felt recoil.

Chambered in 20 gauge, the Model 58 Sportsman is particularly well-suited for upland game hunting and clay shooting, offering a good balance between power and manageable recoil. The shotgun features a lightweight design, with a blued steel receiver and a walnut stock that is both attractive and functional. The gas-operated action allows for reliable cycling of different loads, making it versatile in the field.

The Model 58 Sportsman was produced in various barrel lengths and choke options, with the 20 gauge variant being favored for its ease of handling and effective shot patterns. Although it was eventually succeeded by the Remington Model 1100, the Model 58 Sportsman remains a respected and collectible shotgun, appreciated for its role in advancing semi-automatic shotgun technology and its enduring performance in the field.  Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
