Markings: The import mark under the barrel is small and faded. It appears to read “1917 30-06 CDI SWAN VT”. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. / MODEL OF 1917 / REMINGTON / 599681”. The front of the Remington barrel is marked “R / flaming bomb / 11-18”. The left side of the receiver and top of the bolt handle are each marked with a “flaming bomb” proof. The top left of the receiver, side & rear of the safety and the belly of the stock are each marked with “eagles head” inspection stamps. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked “R” for Remington. The top of the bolt handle and bottom of the buttstock are each marked with the serial number. The nose of the stock is marked “W”. The left side of the stock is marked “16” below the bolt release lever. The bottom of the grip is marked with faded stampings.
Barrel Length: Approximately 26 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set between two protective ears. In the down position the rear sight is an aperture set between 2 protective ears. When flipped up it becomes a sight ladder that uses a sliding aperture. The ladder is marked from “2-16”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a straight grip with finger groove, cutouts for the bolt handle & safety, finger grooves along the sides, nosecap with bayonet lug, 2 sling loops, through bolt, and a metal buttplate with a hinged door for storage. The stacking loop is missing. The refinished buttplate has surface erosion showing through the new finish. It also shows scrapes. The stock shows several scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of the marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Bore Condition: The muzzle & grooves are gray and the rifling is deep. There is erosion present. It is more prominent in the grooves. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.5.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches and areas of light discoloration.The most prominent marks are on the front sight. The screw heads show use. Most of the markings are well defined. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Model 1917 service rifle was made at the tail end of WWI by Remington. At some point the rifle served for a U.S. friendly country. Luckily the import mark under the barrel is small and faded. The rifle was most likely provided to another county during WWII as part of the Lend Lease program. This Model 1917 has been refinished so it looks pretty good pretty good for being over 100 years old. It has clear Remington markings on the receiver and barrel. This would make a nice addition to a Military collection. Good luck.
