Our Assessment: The Steyr AUG/SA, an American semi-automatic version of the Austrian Steyr AUG, is a marvel of engineering and a testament to visionary design. Developed in the early 1970s by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the AUG, or Armee-Universal-Gewehr, redefined expectations for a service rifle with its futuristic appearance and modular capabilities. The AUG/SA maintains these remarkable traits while being adapted for the civilian market. Known for its bullpup configuration, it allows for a shorter overall length without sacrificing barrel length, making it compact yet effective. The rifle’s versatility is amplified by its easy-to-swap barrels and adaptability to various optical systems, enhancing its functionality across a wide range of situations.
One of the most intriguing facets of the Steyr AUG/SA is its use of advanced polymers, making it lightweight and highly durable. Coupled with its ergonomics, the AUG/SA provides a comfortable shooting experience while delivering exceptional performance. Its gas-operated, rotating bolt system ensures reliability, a key factor that has made the original AUG a favored choice for military and law enforcement agencies around the world.
Whether you’re a collector looking for an iconic piece that has graced the arsenals of several nations or an enthusiast seeking a reliable and versatile firearm, the Steyr AUG/SA is a compelling choice. It’s not just a rifle; it’s a statement on how form and function can come together to create something that’s as practical as it is groundbreaking. Owning the AUG/SA means owning a piece of firearms history that’s as relevant today as it was when it first rolled off the assembly lines nearly five decades ago. This is a rare preban 901 Series AUG / SA coming from the early 1980’s. A little more than 5,000 Green AUGs were ever imported into the U.S. and this is one of the earliest examples.
