Our Assessment: The Goncz GA-9 not only stands as a testament to inventive firearms design but also enjoys a slice of pop-culture fame, having been featured in Hollywood movies such as “Planet of the Apes” with Mark Wahlberg and “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as well as number of others like Against the Law, Iron Man 2, Firefly, Direct Hit, Assassins featuring Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico featuring Banderas. This silver-screen appearance has undoubtedly contributed to its allure, making it even more of a sought-after piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Conceived by Hungarian inventor Lajos John Goncz, mainline production for the GA-9 took place between 1984 and 1990, though this particular pistol was made in 1982 and was hand serialized by Goncz himself as one of a few pre production models-adding to its scarcity. The GA-9 is known for its telescopic bolt system encased in a one-piece tubular upper receiver made from heat-treated 4130 solid chrome alloy. Its button-rifled match barrel assures both accuracy and performance, while the standard 16-round magazine can be replaced with re-notched Beretta 92F magazines for added flexibility.
This pistol features an integrated one-piece lower receiver that houses all firing components and the safety mechanism, combining the pistol grip and trigger guard in a seamless design. The Goncz GA-9 is especially noted for its robust and unique firing pin design that uses a striker plate, adding to its reliability. While it may no longer be in production, its innovative engineering and high-profile appearances in film have cemented the Goncz GA-9’s place in both firearms and cinematic history.
Not only are we almost dry on the very last of the Claridge collection, the Claridge’s have decided now is a good time to release this unique and nearly One of a Kind Piece.
These Claridge firearms will soon have their very own display here at the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, making this not only Museum Grade, but more rare than what one of the biggest Firearm Museums in the world will have in their display.
