Our Assessment: The Colt Double Eagle series, including the Combat Commander variant chambered in .45 ACP, has its roots in the iconic Colt M1911 pistol, which was designed by John Browning and adopted by the U.S. military in 1911. Building upon the success of the M1911, Colt introduced the Double Eagle line in 1989 as a modernized and updated version of their classic handgun. The Colt Double Eagle Combat Commander in .45 ACP was specifically designed to offer shooters a more compact and concealable option while still retaining the firepower and reliability of the original M1911 platform. The “Combat Commander” designation indicates its shorter barrel and slide compared to the standard Double Eagle models, making it easier to carry and handle in various situations, particularly for law enforcement officers or individuals in need of a defensive firearm. Introduced in 1989 and produced until 1997, the Colt Double Eagle series aimed to combine the proven performance of the M1911 with modern features such as a decocking lever, enhanced ergonomics, and improved sights. However, despite its innovative design elements and solid construction, the Colt Double Eagle line, including the Combat Commander variant, did not achieve the same level of commercial success as its predecessor. The Colt Double Eagle series was eventually discontinued in the late 1990s, but its legacy continues to influence modern handgun design. The Combat Commander variant, in particular, remains a sought-after collector’s item and a respected choice among firearms enthusiasts for its combination of classic Colt styling, modern features, and compact size in a potent caliber like .45 ACP.
