Our Assessment: Alright, folks, let’s talk about the Colt SP1. This rifle holds a special place in firearms history as it was one of the first commercially available AR-15 rifles on the market. Now, why should you consider adding an SP1 to your collection?
First off, the Colt SP1 has that classic retro look and feel. It’s a piece of American firearms history, and owning one is like holding a tangible connection to the origins of the AR-15 platform. The SP1 features the distinctive slick-sided upper receiver, and that iconic slab-sided lower receiver. It’s a rifle that captures the spirit of the early days of the AR-15.
Secondly, the SP1 is a reliable and solid performer. It’s built by Colt, a trusted name in the firearms industry, known for their quality and craftsmanship. The SP1 is chambered in .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO, offering you a versatile and capable cartridge for a variety of shooting applications, from plinking at the range to hunting small game.
Now, one thing to note is that the SP1 doesn’t have all the modern bells and whistles you might find on more recent AR-15 variants. It lacks a forward assist and a brass deflector. But that’s part of its charm. It takes you back to the roots of the platform, back to a time when simplicity and reliability were the key focus.
So, if you’re someone who appreciates firearms history, wants to own a classic and iconic rifle, and values the reliability of a Colt-made firearm, then the Colt SP1 is worth considering. It’s a rifle that will not only turn heads at the range but also provide you with a connection to the roots of the AR-15 platform. This one comes to us from 1979!
