Markings: Left side of receiver marked “COLT AR-15 CAL. .223 MODEL SP1 SER. SP100875” with the Rampant Colt logo. Marked on left side receiver behind bolt catch “COLT’S FIREARMS DIVISION COLT INDUSTRIES HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.” Marked with “SAFE” and “FIRE”. Top of barrel stamped “C MP CHROME BORE”.   The right side of the carry handle is marked, “C M” just below the rear sight.   The left side of the Bolt is marked, “C” and the neck of the bolt head is marked, “MPC”.  The right side of the bolt has forward assist grooves.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is post iron sight and the rear has an iron peep sight. A1 sights.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is synthetic with an A1 style fixed buttstock with a triangular handguard/forearm and no case deflector.  Checkered synthetic A1 pistol grip. There stock, pistol grip, and triangular handguard all show some wear from age and operation.  There are loose storage marks on the handguard and the pistol grip’s checkering is slightly worn. The LOP measures 12.875” from the front of the trigger to the back of the A1 buttstock. The stock rates in Very Good overall condition for an early SP1.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: No magazines are included with this rifle, but it will take traditional AR .223 magazines.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is minimal to no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows minimal wear around the ejection port. The screw heads are sharp, and the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good+ condition.  The receiver is full of loose storage marks.  There is some wear on the left side of the charging handle.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment:  In beautiful condition that only pre-ban platforms can glow with, this AR-15 is the epitome of basic, but not in a bad way. Basic in this case means pre ban factory configuration, reliable, and ready to use. If you are in the market for your first or fiftieth AR, look no further. Colt sets the standard for AR15 builds, and what better way to bolster your gun collection than add one of these to it? You want this preban combo in your arsenal for its good looks and smooth operation. With a triangular forearm, A1 buttstock, and solid A1 features, you can give this arm the 21st-century treatment at the range or keep it as a show-and-tell piece. Either way, ya gotta bid on it first!
