Our Assessment: The Colt SP1 is an iconic rifle that was first introduced in the 1960s. It’s essentially the civilian version of the M16 used by the US military during the Vietnam War. The SP1 was the first commercial version of the M16 and was produced by Colt from 1963 to 1984.
One of the most notable features of the SP1 is its lack of a forward assist. This is because early versions of the M16 were designed with a self-cleaning mechanism that was supposed to prevent jams, so there was no need for a forward assist. However, this feature was later added to later versions of the rifle.
The SP1 is also known for its lightweight design, which made it a popular choice among hunters and sportsmen. It has a 20-inch barrel and fires the .223 Remington cartridge, which is a popular choice for varmint hunting and target shooting.
Overall, the SP1 is an important piece of firearms history and a popular collector’s item today. Its iconic design and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection.
