Barrel Length: 26″ Medium Heavy
Sights / Optics: The barrel has two pairs of drilled and tapped holes, one at the muzzle with fill-screws and one rear of center without fill-screws. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver bases and rings holding a Bushnell 6-18x scope with duplex reticle. The scope body shows little in the way of wear and the glass is fairly clear. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none present).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb, a checkered black plastic buttplate and sling swivels front and rear. The white spacer and the buttplate are not original to the stock. The stock has some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is generally well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear with well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition as refinished.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original, the jeweling on the bolt is not original.
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some stubborn copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The finish is lightly thinning at some edges. There are a few scattered minor nicks and scuffs. The action shows operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt knob. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are generally clear, the barrel address roll-marking is more shallow in the middle than at either side. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the right side of the receiver. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described and a Boyt leather sling.
Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Varmint rifle made in 1962 and chambered in .220 Swift. The rifle has a medium-heavy barrel which leads to quite a bit of weight for such a small bore. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, though there is some stubborn copper fouling. The rifle comes with a Bushnell 6-18x scope. There is also provision for a variety of other sight types, though no other sights are included. The pre-64 Winchester Model 70 actions are prized by shooters and collectors alike for their smoothness and reliability, and this one is no exception. The .220 Swift is one of the more popular .22 caliber centerfire cartridges, certainly it was one of the most popular when this rifle was produced.
With the heavier barrel of the model 70 Varmint, this rifle is probably more suited to taking out varmints from long range or precision shooting than hunting which will involve much in the way of tracking or stalking. In its condition it would also make a decent addition to a Model 70 collection missing the 26″ Medium Heavy Varmint rifle. The Varmint rifles are fairly scarce, making up just less than 1% of pre-64 Model 70 production. Please see our photos and good luck!
