The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “127927”, found again hand-scribed on the bottom of the bolt (this portion of the bolt was not jeweled). The floorplate is marked “-SUPER GRADE-“. The bottom of the barrel is marked “270 49”.

There is a dovetailed boss at the rear of the barrel, currently filled with a blank. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver bases installed. The left of the receiver at the rear is drilled, tapped and filled for a peep-sight mount (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a capped pistol grip, black nosecap, straight comb with European-style cheekpiece, steel checkered buttplate, and Super-Grade style sling plates inlaid front and rear. The stock has light-moderate handling wear with scattered discoloration, most notable at the toe. There are some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is some kind of fill in the right of the buttstock toward the rear. There is a short, thin crack at the heel. There is slight separation between the forend and nosecap. The checkering is generally well defined. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has mostly worn to white or gone to a light patina with well defined checkering. The stock rates in Good-Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling. There is scattered light erosion and infrequent minor pitting in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 7 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is scattered finish wear, most notable on the barrel and trigger guard. There are scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is infrequent faint surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear and the bolt handle is mostly worn to white. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly disfigured with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the control-feed bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade rifle chambered in .270 Winchester and made in 1949. The Super Grade has nicer-grain wood with a nosecap, grip cap, cheekpiece and nicer checkering than would be found on the Standard Rifles. This example is in about Very Good condition, showing honest wear from use in the field over the last 75 years. The bore is generally strong with some light erosion and infrequent minor pitting. The mechanics are good. The rifle may still make a nice hunting rifle, today. That said, the Pre-64 Winchesters have high collector interest, especially a Super Grade, and this would be a neat addition to a Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
