The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-”. The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “37073”. The bottom of the bolt body is hand-scribed “37073”.
Barrel Length: 24?
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an after-market blade dovetailed to a textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The base is grooved for a hood which is not present. The rear sight has been removed from a boss at the rear of the barrel, the dovetail filled with a blank. The chamber ring is drilled, tapped and filled, the bridge is not. The left of the receiver has had three holes drilled, tapped and filled for an optic mount (none present). The left of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight installed, adjustable for windage and elevation (the sight has matching assembly numbers on the base and sight-arm).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with a pistol grip, straight comb, sling swivels front and rear, and a checkered steel buttplate. The stock has been relieved on the left for the receiver sight, there is no finish in the cut. The stock has some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The finish is thinning at some edges, most notable at the bottom of the grip and at the toe. There is a tiny loss at the heel. The checkering is well defined. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8? from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has mostly worn to white with some finish in the cuts of the well-defined checkering. There is scattered minor oxidation in the worn areas. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition as modified.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore and some stubborn copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8 or 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at some edges. Most of the balance is in scratches and light scrapes on the bottom metal, showing minor oxidation where through the finish. There is light wear on the top of the barrel from the previously installed rear sight. There are a few other scattered minor marks. There is a notable scratch on the breech-face below the chamber. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are generally clear, the left-side receiver marking is interrupted by one of the optic-mount fill-screws. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear the safety is OFF, pushed to the front the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle chambered for the classic .30-06 cartridge and made in 1941. The rifle has some honest wear, consistent with responsible use over the last 83 years. It has strong mechanics and a nice bore. Ammunition for this rifle is (usually) readily available in a variety of loadings and makes for a wonderful hunting rifle that can be used on just about any game in North America. The front sight blade has been replaced and the original rear sight removed with a Lyman receiver sight installed on the left of the receiver. The left of the receiver has also had three holes drilled, tapped and filled for an optic mount, but none is present. Whether you’re looking to add to your Winchester collection or just want a great hunting rifle, this will be a great gun to add to any safe in America. Please see our photos and good luck!
