Our Assessment: This Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle is a desirable magnum-chambered sporting rifle, configured in .300 H&H Magnum with a 26″ barrel, hinged floorplate magazine, factory-style open sights, and provisions for both receiver-sight and scope mounting. The .300 H&H chambering is one of the more sought-after classic Model 70 calibers, particularly in a pre-1964 rifle, and the longer 26″ barrel is appropriate for the cartridge’s magnum performance.
Condition is best described as Good, with the rifle retaining approximately 85% of its original blue finish. The metal shows thinning bluing, scratches, light corrosion staining, and general handling and operational wear, while the screw heads are tooled but serviceable and the markings remain clear. A significant positive is that the bolt serial number matches the rifle, which is an important collector consideration on a Pre-64 Model 70. The stock has been sanded and refinished, with flattened checkering, finish in the checkering, scratches, and compression dents throughout, but no cracks. The refinish limits collector originality, though the stock remains sound and presentable.
Mechanically, the rifle is reported to function correctly, including the three-position safety, though it has not been test-fired. The bore is a strong point, rated 9/10, with bright metal, sharp rifling, no erosion, and only stubborn copper fouling. Overall, this is a Good-condition Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in the desirable .300 H&H Magnum chambering, with original metal finish, matching bolt, strong bore, and useful included sling. Its value is moderated by the refinished stock, finish wear, light corrosion staining, tooled screws, and the manufacture-date inconsistency, but it remains an appealing rifle for a collector-shooter or Winchester enthusiast seeking a classic magnum Model 70.
