Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed into a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the barrel. The top of the chamber ring is drilled, tapped and filled, but the bridge is not. There are Stith mounts installed on the left-rear of the receiver and in the rear sight dovetail holding a Weaver K 2.5x scope with post reticle. The scope body has minor wear and the glass is fairly clear, though the lenses could use a good cleaning. The rifle and stock did not need to be modified to accommodate the scope (apart from the rear sight removal).
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, straight comb, checkered steel buttplate and sling swivels front and rear. The stock has scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches with some areas of thinning finish. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered finish wear with well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is well-defined. There is some scattered minor erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8 out of 10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 93% of its finish. The finish is thinning at some edges, most notable on the bottom metal. There are some minor nicks and scuffs with a few spots of faint surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The markings are clear. The screwheads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. Overall, the rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as described above and a brown leather sling.
Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .250-3000 Savage and made in 1946. It is a Standard Rifle configuration with 24″ barrel and a checkered walnut stock. The .250-3000 Savage cartridge is a “quarter-bore” round that can push was designed by Charles Newton, able to push an 87 grain projectile at 3,000 fps. This gives the cartridge outsized damage for its small size and was the first American cartridge to achieve 3,000 fps. The rifle is in Very Good-plus condition with about 93% of its finish remaining, honest wear in the stock, a good bore and strong mechanics. It has been equipped with a vintage Weaver scope in a Stith mount which conveniently uses the factory mounting provisions rather than having to add holes. This is a beautiful rifle in a desirable cartridge that is ready to head back out in the field or add to your Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
