Our Assessment: The pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight is a refined sporting rifle that combines the strength and smooth operation of Winchester’s controlled-round-feed action with a lighter, handier configuration. This 1960 example is chambered in .308 Winchester and features a 22″ barrel, internal magazine with hinged floorplate, custom checkered walnut stock, and a Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x40mm scope with duplex reticle. Its classic pre-64 action, versatile chambering, and quality optic make it well suited for both hunting and precision field use.

Introduced in 1952, the Featherweight variant was developed to provide hunters with a lighter alternative to the standard Model 70 while retaining the same robust action and traditional workmanship. The .308 Winchester chambering became a natural fit for the model, offering efficient performance in a short-action cartridge suitable for deer, elk, and a broad range of North American game. Pre-64 Model 70 rifles remain especially desirable for their forged and machined components, claw extractor, three-position safety, and long-standing reputation as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.”

This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish, with light scratches, minor corrosion freckling, and honest handling and operational wear. The custom walnut stock remains in Very Good condition with scattered light dents and a few small finish chips but no cracks. The bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9.5/10, while the action and safety function correctly. Overall, this is a Very Good custom-stocked pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight with an excellent bore and strong sporting appeal. Please see our photos for a better understanding of the condition and good luck with your bids! MF
