Our Assessment: This Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Westerner is a desirable late-production C&R rifle, manufactured in 1962 and chambered in .264 Winchester Magnum. As a Pre-64 Model 70, it carries the controlled-round-feed action, three-position safety, and overall machining quality that make these rifles highly regarded among Winchester collectors and classic sporting-rifle enthusiasts. The Featherweight Westerner configuration, 22″ barrel, Monte Carlo comb stock, factory open sights, hinged floorplate magazine, and receiver provisions for both aperture sight and scope mounting give it strong period-correct sporting appeal.

Condition is solid but shows honest field use. The rifle retains approximately 90% of its original blue finish, with light handling and operational wear, scattered scratches and dings on the barrel, and some thinning at the muzzle. The screw heads remain sharp, the markings are clear, and the bolt serial number matches the receiver, all of which are important positives for collector confidence. The walnut stock is in Good condition, showing scratches, compression dents, and scattered weathered finish loss, but no chips or cracks. The installed sling mounts are typical for a hunting rifle and add practical utility without significantly detracting from its overall presentation.

Mechanically, the rifle is reported to function correctly, including the three-position safety, though it has not been test-fired. The bore rates 8/10, with bright metal, sharp rifling, minor throat erosion, and minor fouling. The throat erosion is worth noting in a .264 Winchester Magnum, as this high-velocity chambering can be harder on throats, but the bore still appears strong and serviceable. Overall, this is a Good to Very Good Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Westerner with desirable chambering, original finish, matching bolt, and sound mechanics. Its value is moderated by stock wear, weathered finish loss, muzzle thinning, and minor throat erosion, but it remains an appealing collector-shooter for a Winchester enthusiast or vintage hunting-rifle buyer.
