Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is . There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The action shows light operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt handle. There is faint wear on the top of the receiver consistent with a previously installed scope mount. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, the rifle is in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: A brown leather sling is included.

Our Assessment: This is a lovely Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Carbine made in 1951. A fairly scarce variant, its 20″ barrel is chambered for 7x57mm Mauser. Carbines made up about 1.25% of pre-64 Model 70 production and there were only about 1,400 of any configuration chambered for 7mm Mauser. This early smokeless cartridge was developed in the 1890s, but remains in production today and is popular for use in hunting small to medium game. It is quite versatile with a fairly flat trajectory, modest recoil, and a wide variety of loadings are typically available.

The rifle itself is in Fine condition with wear primarily in the stock, consistent with responsible use in the field. The bore and the mechanics are strong. This should still prove to be a great hunting rifle for the lucky winner. That said, as a pre-64 Model 70 in high condition and a scarce variant, it will also make a great addition for the collector. Good luck and happy bidding!
