Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA – WINCHESTER – MODEL 70 – 270 WIN.- / – WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL – – TRADE MARK -“, along with a circled “WP” proof mark. The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / – TRADE MARK -“, along with a circled “WP” proof mark. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number “165281”. The serial number on the bolt matches the serial number on the receiver, however, it is not very legible.

Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade dovetailed to a ramped base, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable folding U-notch sight, dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Redfield 3-9x scope, with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light handling wear. Overall, the scope rates in Very Good to Fine condition. The scope is mounted to a one-piece Redfield base, and sits in 1″ rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, checkered steel buttplate, a checkered forend, and sling rings front and rear. There is a leather sling attached to the stock. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock has been refinished, as there are faint sanding marks, and the finish itself is considerably lighter than the finish that Winchester would have used during that time period. There are a few minor surface-level imperfections present, but otherwise, the stock’s refinish is intact, and the wood grain is attractive. The checkering is well defined, and the stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original (Metal – The bluing on the barrel, receiver & bottom metal is original, however, the bolt handle/knob has been touched up with cold blue). As stated above, the stock has been refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows very minor surface oxidation and slight patina throughout the barrel, receiver, and trigger guard. There is some light finish loss on the claw extractor, and operational marks on the bolt and friction surfaces of the action, along with minor scratches and imperfections throughout the barrel, receiver, and buttplate. The checkering on the buttplate is well defined. As stated above, the bolt handle/knob has been touched up with cold blue. The bluing is largely intact, throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads range from lightly tooled to sharp, but all retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the sling and scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 is one of the most respected American sporting rifles of the 20th century, prized for its controlled-round-feed action, Mauser-style claw extractor, three-position safety, and high standard of machining and fit. This 1950 Standard configuration is chambered in .270 Winchester with a 24″ barrel and retains its matching serialized bolt, factory iron sights, checkered steel buttplate, and classic walnut sporting stock. The .270 Winchester became closely associated with the Model 70 as a flat-shooting and highly versatile North American hunting cartridge, making this an especially traditional Pre-64 hunting configuration.

This rifle is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 85% of its metal finish with minor surface oxidation and patina, light finish loss on the claw extractor, operational wear on the bolt and action surfaces, and scattered scratches and imperfections. The bolt handle and knob have been touched up with cold blue. The checkered walnut stock has been refinished and rates in Fine condition, showing faint sanding evidence and a lighter-than-original finish, but attractive grain, well-defined checkering, and no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10, while the action and safety function correctly. The included Redfield 3-9x scope has clear glass and rates in Very Good to Fine condition, and a leather sling is also included. Despite the stock refinish and localized finish touch-up, this remains an attractive 1950 Pre-64 Model 70 in the classic .270 Winchester chambering.
