The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / – TRADE MARK -“, along with a circled “WP” proof. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The floorplate is marked “- SUPER GRADE -“.
Barrel Length: 26″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a King Reflector beaded blade dovetailed into a base that is integral to the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable folding U notch that is dovetailed to the barrel. The left side of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a peep sight. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope. There is a Leupold M8 4x scope with Duplex reticle installed. We cannot guarantee optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece checkered walnut, tipped forend, capped pistol grip, straight comb with cheekpiece, and vented rubber recoil pad. The LOP is 13 1/2″ from trigger to recoil pad. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There are spots of worn finish. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some minor fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish. There is handling and operational wear. There are scratches and light corrosion stains throughout. The left side of the receiver has four holes that were drilled and tapped for a scope base. The holes have been plugged and polished over. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. However, the safety is a bit stiff. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade represents the premium expression of Winchester’s classic controlled-round-feed sporting rifle. This 1949 example is chambered in .300 H&H Magnum and features a 26″ barrel, hinged floorplate, checkered walnut stock with contrasting forend tip and capped pistol grip, and a Leupold M8 4x scope. The Super Grade-marked floorplate, long magnum action, and traditional stock configuration give it strong appeal as a vintage big-game rifle.
Introduced in 1936, the Model 70 quickly earned the nickname “The Rifleman’s Rifle” for its strong Mauser-influenced action, claw extractor, three-position safety, and refined handling. The Super Grade was Winchester’s deluxe configuration, offering upgraded stock work and finish for discerning sportsmen. Chambered in .300 H&H Magnum, this rifle reflects the golden age of classic bolt-action safari and North American hunting rifles, when the cartridge was highly regarded for its flat trajectory, smooth feeding, and suitability for large game.

The walnut stock remains in Good condition with dents and finish wear but no chips or cracks, while the bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9/10. The action functions correctly, though the safety is somewhat stiff, and the plugged, polished-over scope-base holes on the left side of the receiver detract from originality. Overall, this is a Good-condition pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade with strong sporting and collector appeal.
