Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine is a C&R-eligible Pre-64 example manufactured in 1922 and chambered in .32 Winchester Special. The 20″ barrel, magazine tube, banded forend, straight-grip walnut stock, shotgun-style buttplate, and pinned beaded front sight give it the classic early Winchester carbine profile. The rear sight is a desirable three-leaf Winchester Express sight, and the upper tang is drilled and tapped for a peep sight, adding useful period-style sighting versatility.
Condition is Good overall as refinished. The rifle retains about 75% of its current metal finish, with scratches, light corrosion freckling, thinning blue on leading edges, and visible polish marks that were blued over during refinishing. The markings are softened but remain legible, and the lightly tooled screw heads are serviceable. The stocks have also been refinished and show scratches, compression dents, and some oil darkening at the wrist. Sling mounts have been installed, adding practical field utility but further reducing collector originality. There are no cracks, and the wood rates Good to Very Good as refinished.
The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, minor pitting throughout, and some stubborn fouling, rating 8/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the half-cock safety and lever safety operate properly, and the trigger is crisp, though the rifle has not been test fired. Overall, this is a solid and functional 1922 Winchester 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine in .32 Winchester Special, with attractive early carbine features and a respectable bore, though its refinished metal and wood, softened markings, added sling mounts, and general wear place it more firmly in the shooter or representative-collector category than among high-originality examples.
