The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock is marked with a circle “C.M.P.” on the bottom of the grip. The stock and handguard wood have been sanded and refinished. The wood surfaces show scattered compressions and dings. There is a large chip missing at the top of the wrist under the receiver end, and another where the changing handle cut is. There are no cracks. The metal butt plate has retained most of its refinished metal finish and has semi-sharp checkering. Overall the wood on this rifle is in Good condition as refinished.
Type of Finish: Parkerized and coated.
Finish Originality: Original and refinished.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is minor visible erosion and some fouling in the last third of the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its refinished metal finish. There is some finish loss on the front sight wings, scratches on the gas tube, and some very minor marks on the barrel. There is some very minor friction wear on the bolt, barrel and receiver from use. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. As mentioned above the rear sight will need to be repaired. Overall this rifle is in Good to Good+ condition as refinished, for C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a leather sling and two en bloc clips.
Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Springfield Armory, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match. The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. This example is a post-war M1 Garand rifle produced between 1955 and 1957. It represents one of the last production batches of this iconic firearm before the U.S. military fully transitioned to newer rifles like the M14. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.
