Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand CMP Collector’s Grade rifle, manufactured in 1957, represents one of the finest examples of the iconic American service rifle. Sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) in 2004, this Collector’s Grade designation indicates a rifle with all original parts, at least 80% original finish, and markings as they were when the rifle left the Springfield Armory. The M1 Garand, renowned as the standard-issue rifle of U.S. forces during World War II and the Korean War, is celebrated for its reliability, accuracy, and innovative semi-automatic design, which provided a significant advantage over bolt-action rifles used by other nations during its service period. The 1957 Springfield M1 Garand showcases the final refinements of the Garand’s production, featuring the characteristic 24-inch barrel, .30-06 chambering, and distinctive gas-operated rotating bolt system. The rifle’s elegant walnut stock and parkerized finish reflect the high standards of post-war production, preserving the historical and functional attributes that make the M1 Garand a revered firearm. As a Collector’s Grade rifle, it retains its original components, including the correct markings, cartouches, and percentage of its finish, making it highly desirable for collectors seeking authenticity. These rifles are thoroughly inspected by the CMP to ensure they meet the rigorous criteria for Collector’s Grade status. This example has an amazing bore for an original barrel. Owning a Springfield M1 Garand CMP Collector’s Grade rifle from 1957 offers both historical value and a connection to the legacy of American military arms. The rifle’s blend of historical significance, exceptional craftsmanship, and enduring performance makes it a standout piece for any collector or shooter who values the heritage and impact of the M1 Garand as a symbol of American ingenuity and military success.
