Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / MADE IN U.S.A.”, -MODEL 42 – 410 – 3 IN CHAM- / -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-” and “FULL”. The bottom of the receiver and barrel extension are each marked “104960”, the last “0” on the barrel extension is double-struck. The left of the rib is marked “SIMMONS GUN SPECIALTIES, INC., OLATHE, KANSAS”.

Choke: The barrel is marked Full but our gauge measures Modified, Fixed
Sights/Optics: There is an orange plastic sight in a base at the front of the rib. The top of the rib, its extension, and the receiver are serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered deluxe walnut with extended slide-handle, capped pistol grip, straight comb and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The stocks have a few light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures 14 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has what appears to be a small inclusion at the toe with minor wear and well defined checkering. Overall, the stocks are in Fine condition as not original to the gun.

Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 95% of its current metal finish. The new finish is generally strong throughout with light operational wear, a few scattered minor marks, and infrequent spots of minor surface oxidation. There is some scattered minor erosion under the finish, most notable on the right of the barrel extension and on the right of the receiver in front of the ejection port. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings range from clear to soft, but legible. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good-Fine condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage post-war Winchester Model 42 .410 bore pump action shotgun manufactured in 1951. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin, the Model 12. This is a nice example that appears to have made a trip to Simmons Gun Specialties, sporting a ventilated rib on its 26″ barrel. In addition to the rib, the bore has been opened up to Modified from its original Full choke and the gun has been equipped with deluxe walnut stocks. The gun has been refinished, so it looks great for its age, in Very Good-Fine condition as refinished. This would be a gun for clays or in the field as well as a nice addition to a Winchester collection. Good luck and happy bidding!
