Bore Condition: The bore is light gray and the rifling is mostly sharp. There is light erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 7/10.

Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s..

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. Most of the bluing wear is centered on the bolt. There are light scratches and nicks throughout. There is faint wear in the action. The screw heads are lightly tooled. The markings are somewhat blurry and faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Polish P.F.K. Warszawa Wz.29 K98k bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser is a historically significant firearm that reflects Poland’s efforts to modernize its military during the interwar period. Developed by the Panstwowa Fabryka Karabinów (State Rifle Factory) in Warsaw, the Wz.29 was a modification of the German Gewehr 98 and the Karabiner 98k, adapted to suit Poland’s needs. The Wz.29 rifle was built on the Mauser 98 action, which is known for its strength, reliability, and accuracy. Chambered in the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge (also known as 8mm Mauser), the rifle offered powerful performance with effective range and stopping power, making it a versatile weapon for infantry use. The Wz.29 was designed with a shorter barrel than the older Gewehr 98, which made it more maneuverable, especially in close-quarters combat or when used by cavalry and artillery units. Despite the shorter barrel, the rifle maintained the accuracy and long-range capabilities associated with Mauser-pattern rifles. The design included a straight bolt handle, a tangent rear sight adjustable for distance, and a bayonet lug, which made it a practical and adaptable infantry weapon. The Wz.29 played a significant role in Poland’s military history during the lead-up to World War II, with many rifles seeing service in the Polish Army’s struggle against both German and Soviet forces during the 1939 invasion of Poland. While the Wz.29 was eventually outmatched by more modern rifles, its robust design and reliability made it a valued weapon during its time of service.

Overall, the Polish P.F.K. Warszawa Wz.29 K98k represents an important chapter in Poland’s efforts to develop a modern military arsenal. Its strong Mauser action, effective 7.92x57mm chambering, and rugged construction made it a capable and reliable rifle for the Polish forces during a turbulent period in European history. -R.E.
