Sights / Optics: The front sight is a globe with a suspended circle crosshair, the globe has a bubble level and is dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a folding fine adjustment rear tang mounted peep sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered wood with a straight comb, straight grip, brass nose cap, three case color barrel bands, and a brass buttplate. The buttplate has scuffs, and draglines. The right side of the butt is marked “PARKER / HALE LTD” in a circle. There are a few little scuffs, compressions, and draglines. There are some little spots of stubborn residue, most noticeable on the butt. The checkering is intact and well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures approximately 13? from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall, the stock is in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The grooves are bright and the lands are semi-bright, the rifling is strong. There is a small patch of erosion in the bore. A cleaning patch is in the breech of the rifle. In this writer’s opinion and for the age, this bore rates a 8 out of 10.
Most antique firearms have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the use of black powder. When fired, black powder reacts corrosively. NRA Antique Firearm Conditions Standards are quite lenient for bores. In some cases the NRA standards disregarded the bore’s condition for collectors firearms.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered light scratches on the barrel. The base of the barrel has turned to a plum patina. The brass components have some draglines, scuffs, and a bit of tarnish. The case color and bluing are still strong. There are a few spots of stubborn residue. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions properly. The hammer has a half-cock safety notch. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A linen and leather reproduction Enfield sling is present and attached to the rifle. Two .451 hexagonal Whitworth bullet molds are present and complete. Three bags of felt hexagonal bullet wads are present.
Our Assessment: In the year 1854, Sir Joseph Whitworth, was commissioned by the English War Office to design a rifle to replace the Enfield Pattern 53, he started to work on a .451 caliber rifle, equipped with a barrel having a hexagonal bore profile. The rifle outperformed all competitors during the tests made in 1859 and enabled Queen Victoria to easily hit a target at 366 meters (400 yards), during the first meeting of the British rifle association. Also used during the American Civil War, the rifle equipped the sharpshooters of the Confederate army, hence the name “Whitworth Sharpshooters”.
