Our Assessment: This Pedersoli Model 1873 Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine is a modern Italian-made reproduction of the classic U.S. Springfield trapdoor carbine, chambered in .45-70 Government. Manufactured in 2006 by its “CA” date code, it features the traditional 22″ barrel, single-shot trapdoor action, adjustable ladder rear sight, saddle ring bar and ring, semi-crescent buttplate, and compact cavalry-style stock configuration. The blued and case-color finish combination gives it strong period-inspired appeal, while Pedersoli manufacture makes it attractive to shooters and collectors looking for a quality modern representation of the original military carbine.
Condition is Excellent overall, with the carbine retaining about 97% of its original finish. The metal shows only light handling and operational wear, with sharp screw heads and clear markings throughout. The one-piece half-length wood stock is also in Excellent condition, showing minor handling wear with a few scattered scratches and compression dents. There is a small chip repair on the left side, noted as appearing factory, but there are no cracks, and the stock remains solid and attractive.
The bore is a strong point, remaining bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only slight fouling, rating 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the half-cock safety operates as intended, though the carbine has not been test fired. Overall, this is a clean and well-preserved Pedersoli 1873 Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine with excellent bore condition, strong mechanics, high remaining finish, and classic .45-70 trapdoor handling, making it well suited for black powder cartridge shooting, historical display, or military-style reproduction collecting.
