Our Assessment: The Olympic Arms Whitney Wolverine is a modern recreation of the original Whitney Wolverine pistols that were produced in the mid-1950s. The original Whitney Wolverine was a unique and innovative semi-automatic pistol known for its futuristic design and advanced features. It was one of the first handguns to extensively use lightweight aluminum alloys in its construction.
The Whitney Wolverine was designed by Robert L. Hillberg, who aimed to create a lightweight and ergonomic pistol suitable for both target shooting and self-defense. Its distinctive appearance, with its sleek lines and forward-leaning grip angle, made it stand out among other handguns of its time.
The original Whitney Wolverine featured a blowback action, which means the force of the cartridge’s discharge propelled the slide rearward, extracting and ejecting the spent casing, and then chambering a new round from the magazine. It had a fixed barrel, which contributed to its inherent accuracy.
Fast forward to the present day, Olympic Arms acquired the rights to the Whitney Wolverine name and design. They have developed a modern version of the pistol, known as the Olympic Arms Whitney Wolverine. This modern iteration aims to replicate the unique aesthetics and features of the original while incorporating some contemporary enhancements.
The Olympic Arms Whitney Wolverine retains the iconic lines and grip angle of the original, providing a nostalgic feel for those familiar with the classic design. It is chambered in .22 LR, making it a suitable choice for recreational shooting and plinking. The modern version features a polymer frame for weight reduction and durability, while the slide is constructed of aluminum for a balance of strength and lightness.
While the Olympic Arms Whitney Wolverine seeks to pay homage to the original design, it is important to note that there may be some differences and improvements in terms of materials, manufacturing techniques, and overall performance. It is a modern interpretation that brings the spirit of the Whitney Wolverine into the present era.
In summary, the Olympic Arms Whitney Wolverine is a modern recreation of the iconic Whitney Wolverine pistols from the 1950s. It retains the unique design elements and forward-thinking features of the original, while incorporating modern materials and manufacturing techniques. This allows enthusiasts to experience the nostalgia of the classic Whitney Wolverine while enjoying the benefits of modern production standards.
