Our Assessment: The Olympic Arms OA-93 is one of the most distinctive AR-pattern pistols produced during the late 20th century, notable for its unique recoil system mounted above the barrel that eliminated the need for a traditional receiver extension and buffer tube. This innovative arrangement allowed Olympic Arms to create a compact rifle-caliber pistol with a profile unlike conventional AR-pattern firearms. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, a cartridge best known for its extensive military service worldwide, the OA-93 offered considerably more projectile mass than the standard 5.56 NATO chambering while retaining the familiar controls and operation of the AR platform. This example remains in very good overall condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original finish with moderate handling wear, scattered scratches, and minor discoloration visible throughout. The bore remains strong, showing bright surfaces and sharp rifling with only minor fouling present, supporting its 9 out of 10 rating. The tubular aluminum handguard exhibits the majority of the cosmetic wear, while the polymer grip remains structurally sound. The pistol includes two magazines and accompanying paperwork. Of note, the magazines require additional effort to seat properly in the magazine well, a condition prospective owners should be aware of.

Altogether, this Olympic Arms OA-93 represents an unusual and increasingly collectible variation of the AR-pattern pistol concept. Its compact 9-inch barrel, bufferless operating arrangement, 7.62x39mm chambering, and distinctive profile separate it from conventional AR pistols and highlight Olympic Arms’ innovative approach to firearm design. As surviving examples become less common, the OA-93 continues to attract interest from collectors seeking unique and historically significant developments in the evolution of AR-pattern firearms. -R.E.
